Deb: Goodbye 2011

and Hello 2012!

The tree is down, the decorations put away, the cookies eaten and Gary and I are heading down to our second Christmas - this time with the newlyweds!  Since we will be gone for a while, I really want to put some thoughts down on what I would like to see for 2012:

Of course the number one is to run a half marathon with Valerie!  I would also like to run a race with Laura in Dutchess County.  There are so many great ones in the spring, so I hope our schedules can manage it.  I would love to do another "girls" run, but know how tough scheduling that is!  I want to take my gym membership seriously and get the most out of what I am paying.  Lift, lift, lift!

Of course there is more (un-running related stuff), but that is for another day...off to PA for now!

Deb: Know your course

One of my helpful hints for running a race is to know your course.  I like knowing what to expect - hills, turns, and "not much longer - you can do it" mindsets.  My upcoming half marathon route is on the internet:

http://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/50721810

But, of course I like to see the route in person, so I am dragging Gary to Atlantic City for a short weekend visit.  We will drive the route, check out the area and roadways, get to know the turnaround and then head back home.  It was a tough sell, but I explained to Gary how important this aspect of a race is to me and so he said he would suffer through the weekend in AC!  Thanks Honey!

Deb: The AC tips

I found these on the Atlantic City Marathon website and LOVE #10.

To register for these races, go to www.acmarathon.org or like the organization on facebook to see contests and event updates.
Are you a first-timer marathoner? No problem. The Atlantic City Marathon Race Series offers these “Top 10 Training Tips in 2012” for first-time runners:

Just getting started?
1. Give yourself 8-9 weeks to train for a half marathon, 12 weeks to train for a marathon.
Training
2. “Start out by running and walking together and not to worry about how far you run,” says Steve Antzczk of NJShoreRun.com. “A lot of new runners are fixated about the distance they are trying to cover and get discouraged. I suggest starting out only running by time (number of minutes) and build up to an hour of running”
3. Stay hydrated! Drink plenty of water and/or sports drink before, during and after your workout.
4. Stride matters. Land mid-foot (as opposed to on your heal or toes). This may require you to slow down and focus on your movement, but in the long run, improves your speed and stamina.
5. Running isn’t everything. Your training should include cross training, such as yoga, weight training or cycling on non-running days. Visit http://www.jccatlantic.org for more information on fitness classes that will help make you a better runner.
6. Challenge yourself! Even beginners should push themselves a little further or faster at least once a week.
7. Run safe. Make sure someone knows where you are running and carry identification.
Training on the Atlantic City Boardwalk?
8. Lucky you! Not only are you getting to know the course, the boardwalk offers give and less stress on the joints and muscles.
9. Take days to rest. And by rest, we mean don’t run at all. Give your muscles and joints a change to recover.
Number 10! “Be proud of your accomplishments” says personal running trainer, Justin founder of personalrunningtrainer.com. “Each workout is an achievement to be celebrated. Each second shaved off your time or pound off your waistline is your victory. Relish being alive and having the ability to run. Take pride in your progress as you complete each step.”

Deb: Curve ball

The oil company has thrown me a curve ball.  But if you are in the big leagues, you have to learn to hit it - no striking out for me!

It has been a great, but tough, week.  Monday I got my returns done and worked out really, really good.  Tuesday I worked all day, but came home to a great home cooked meal of venison tacos (yum).  Today it is back to the gym for another workout, which will also be really, really good.  Three fast balls down the middle and I hit them all out of the park.

Then the curve ball.  The oil company can only deliver on Thursday.  A beautiful, sunny, 56 degree day in the northeast.  My long run day.  Since I am stuck at home from 1:30 to 5, I have decided to do my "long run" on my treadmill at home.  There may be a little sweat on the check I hand the oil guy, but so be it.  And, if he comes right away, I can always head for the hills (Knight Road that is!).  I may only foul off that curve ball, but at least I will still be up to bat!

Deb: Tough week ahead

As I plan my week, I see that it is going to be tough to do all I want.  I am working full time (oh no!!) for the other girl in the office one day, I have to get oil delivered one day,  I have returns to do (yes, already!!), I have Christmas dinner to make to bring to Val's and some last minute shopping.

Oh and by the way, I have my workouts (legs and arms) to do, my long run and my regular aerobics.  The key is to prioritize and organize.  The only problems I foresee is the weather and the question of my oil delivery.  Will Thursday clear up enough to do my long run?  I am hoping it will work out.  I plan on legs today, work tomorrow,  arms Wed, long run Thursday and maybe a quick workout Friday.  That should put me in a great position for a busy Christmas weekend!

Deb: Long Run - Part two

and a glimpse in to my psycho mind.....

Of course it was raining when I got out of work yesterday.  So I debated in my mind.  What to do, what to do?  It would be so easy to go home and do nothing, but I was ready though.  I have all my stuff with me so I decide to go to the gym and try to do my long run on the treadmill, no problem.

I get to the gym and start to change - no sweat pant to put on after working out.  Uh oh.  It would be so easy to go home and do nothing, but, hey, I can throw my work dress back on after working out, no problem.

Get on the treadmill and start running.  It was tough.  So much harder than running outside, but I will stick with it.  So there was an elliptical next to me, actually two.  Of course, someone gets on the one right next to me.   Don't flip out Debbie.  Just keep going at your pace, doing what you are doing.  AND then someone gets on the treadmill right next to me.  Ahhh, they are boxing me in.  Don't flip out!!!

To understand this fully, realize that there are two rows of treadmills in the back and one row (of about 15 in each row) in the front and I was the only one in that row!  AND, if you know me, I like to be left alone.   I am focused and don't like people being in my space.  I don't want to feel their body heat, worry about my sweat going all over or my heavy breathing (or is it wheezing) bothering them.

It would be so easy to get off and just go home, but I turned up my ipod and kept going.  So the guy got off the treadmill after about 5 minutes (whatever)- Yea!  Go Deb Go,  I was running like crazy and what happens.  Someone jumps on that same treadmill - right next to me again!! But now I am heading back (an out and back run on the treadmill, hehe) and there was no way I was stopping.

After my hour, I got off the treadmill, was wiping it down and of course the guy on the other treadmill had to tell me what a great job I did.  Nice, non-threatening, but sooo not me!

So I go to take a shower, no underwear!  I am not putting those sweaty ones back on.  Leave the gym in my dress and flip flops.  Thank goodness I was just going home!   This was one crazy day at the gym with lots of "psycho mind" road blocks for me.  I  know it is all in my head and I love that I just did it.  I can't worry about the things I can't change - especially in the moment, but I now can be even more prepared, learn from what happened and remember to take that last treadmill in the row!

Deb: Long Run

Note to self - Do your Long Run.

If I say I am going to do something, I do it.  That is why I never commit to something unless I am sure it will happen.  My famous words are  "we will see", "let me think about it", "not sure, I'll talk to Gary", etc, etc.

I really, really, really, really, want to TRY to do a long run (six or more miles) each week and I really, really, really, don't want to do it on the treadmill if I can help it.  So today is suppose to be warm and, if the rain holds off, I WILL do my long run.  My bag is packed and I am ready.

Ginny - Seeing your progress for your half is very motivating.  I love the way you are committing to this race, as Laura did for hers!  I know I will do well if I can channel both of your drives.

Deb: Age

Some days I just feel so old!  My knees ache, I'm tired and my energy is totally zapped.  I wonder why am I doing all this exercising?  What is the use - I will never be that hot twenty two year old again!  I know I am ranting, but that is what I need today.  Some days I just hate getting old....

And then I watch the biggest loser and see SIXTY year olds losing hundreds of pounds and feeling great.  Pushing themselves and they are OLD!! :)  And then Gary comes home from his holiday run (8 miles) up the Fishkill hill and tells me how Fred (72 years old) was there and running too.  Age is relative.

Yea, it is harder as you get older, and you youngsters really don't grasp that (Ginny and Val!!).  But I have to push on.  Look back to learn and look ahead with positiveness.  The years go by so fast and I want to look back on pushing 50 as a good thing.  Val, my advise is to take advantage of your age as you will never be 28 again.

Focus

So first off let me start by saying I hate my blackberry.  I miss my Droid phone with it's large screen and easy to navigate apps.  I hate having to sign in every half hour just to check my gmail.  I hate not having google maps or the possibility to zoom with only two fingers.  All in all, I hate almost everything about my blackberry.  It stressed me out to no end the week I was supposed to leave for Europe.  It stressed me out while I was abroad and racked up a ton of international data minutes checking work emails and my schedule.  It stressed me out when I got home and couldn't even update my fantasy line-up on it thus losing in the playoff round.

The point of this whole rant though is to say how important focus is.  I've been so focused on finding a "fix" or "dealing" with issues that were bothering me that I couldn't focus on really anything else.  While I was gone I only ran once and that was just so I wouldn't disappoint mom.  There were so many fires that I had to put out and only so much time in a day to do it.  As my focus continued to be centered on things I need to get done and stuff that I needed to finish that day I began to lose my perspective.

I realized that this weekend and went into today with one focus.  Prioritize your time so that you can go to the gym by 4:30, run and make the 5:30 bodypump class.  This is all that I have focused on today and I fully intend to make it happen.  It's a real shift in perspective for me and one that I think I really needed.

Making this happen has revolved around the idea that everything that I need to do today I will also need to do tomorrow and the next day etc.  Now for all those managers out there reading this please don't worry.  I'm not advocating becoming a slacker at your job and trying to rationalize it by the fact that you want to be healthy.  There is definitely a balance.  For me I've focused so much on work lately that I won't allow myself to do anything but work until I'm completely devoid of energy at the end of the day.  The beauty of knowing that I have to prioritize the gym is that I have a time limit.  This works great for me since I am extremely efficient when under pressure.  As you can see this paradigm may not work for everyone.

Using this technique today required me to make a list of everything I needed to do this week and then prioritize the tasks.  By doing this I no longer have the stress of dealing with the little things that are bothering me or focusing on what needs to be changed that I can't immediately change.  I hate my blackberry still but I realize that until the blackberry guy calls me back there is nothing I can do to change my situation.  Somehow that's freeing.  :)  And of course now I have no excuses for not going to the gym at 4:30!

Deb: Conquering the Arc Trainer

Such a fine line between love and hate....

My new love is the arc machine.  It is a cross between the treadmill and an elliptical.  And it burns mega calories.  I started out dying at three quarters of a mile and now I can proudly say I did 2 miles yesterday at the gym!  Every visit to the gym, I could feel it trying to make eye contact, hear it calling my name and trying to get me to come over.  The attraction is undeniable and has me coming back again and again.  I hope it helps with my running training, because I am helpless to give it up right now!

BTW Laura, it was 12 miles over 3 days on the treadmill : )  I totally agree with you that a long run is ONLY an outside run!!

Deb: Don't give up

So I must tell myself this.

I have been going to the gym faithfully, drinking my water, ran 9 miles one day and another 12 on the treadmill, and not sneaking any C and C's (chips and chocolate).  But I was two pounds up this Friday.  So I must tell myself - give it time, stay with it and don't stop!

Next weeks goal will be to really be aware of what I do and what I don't do.  I will make it a good week and have a wonderful weigh in on Friday.  I won't give up.

Cheerio!

Hello from England!!!

Sorry that I haven't been able to post much while I've been abroad.  Work has been busy and the time change has been a bit rough.

England has been great though!  Funny enough, they had beautiful weather for all of November and the day before I got here it went down the drain.  It has been cold and raining for three days straight here.  The second night we had an incredible hail storm.  I have never seen anything like it.  In New England it's either rain or snow and not usually in between.

Despite all of that I managed to make it to the gym and do a 4mile run!  :)  The AZ gym is quite nice here.  I had to bribe them to let me "test" it our for a day since everyone else has to pay a monthly fee to gain access to the gym.  It felt nice to shake the cobwebs off after so much traveling.

I don't know if it was the exercise or just that I have been over here a couple of days now but I finally feel like I'm not jet-lagged anymore.  Just in time as I fly back to the states tomorrow :)

Signing off for now,
Val

Deb: Long Run

Monday's weather was perfect for a long run.  I know there won't be too many of these kinds of days left, so I took advantage.  After getting a late start and running into some roadblocks, I headed off to run over the bridge, thinking that I will try to do 7.5 miles to keep up with Ginny.  It was so wonderful that I ended up doing 9 miles.   I was very consistent with my pace, with mile 5 and mile 9 being a bit slower - interesting....

I will head over to the gym to lift after I run some errands after work.

12/6/11-am- 10 minute abs, 20 pushups, 3.5 miles on treadmill

12/5/11-pm - 9 mile run outside

Deb: Day off

Sunday I took the day off from "training".  I wish I could of just took the day off!  I caught up on my food shopping, meal planning, wash, and, of course, watching the Jets.  I am hoping to go for a nice run today since it is suppose to be ok outside.  It is a must when you live in the northeast to take advantage of any day over 50 in December!

12/5/11  10 minute abs, 4 mile on the treadmill

Deb: Weekends

Weekends are tough, but it really helps when you have support.  Both Gary and I went to the gym, since I can bring a guest for free.  It was great.  We got there early and worked out for about an hour and a half.

I am downing my water for today, so that I can switch to a few beers : )

12/3/11:  Upper body, 1.25 on arc machine

12/2/11 at PF:  lower body, 1.25 miles on arc; 5 miles on bike

Breaking the Silence

So it's been a couple days since I've posted which for me equates to a couple days since I've run.  So I'm going to make an effort to post even if I don't run.

Congrats to mom on joining a gym!  I know what a huge step this is for her and I think it will impact her training immensely.

So December goals....I'm in on the water challenge with Mom.  For me I'd like to start running before work.  My goal in December is to do this once a week.  I know, that doesn't seem like much of a challenge but believe me it is when you are getting in to work at 7-7:30am everyday.

I also want to run four times a week.  For me, anything more than that is giving me a lower return on investment.  That doesn't mean I can't cross-train in between!  I'm going to try to get Greg to come to spin class with me.  I have always loved spin, Ginny I highly suggest getting the shoes if you haven't already.  I think Greg would also enjoy it!

So today is a three mile run for me...I plan to do it after work and I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow.  Tomorrow am is my longer run, which at this point in my training means 4 miles.  Don't worry it quickly goes up  :)

Here is a link to the training regimen I'm going to loosely follow.

Deb: Ginny the Gardener

So Ginny panted the seed "Are you thinking about cross training? It looks like most of the marathon training programs recommend that".   And then she threw some water on it "(I love my spin classes and boot camp, so I'm glad I don't have to give them up to train!)"  and look what grew - I joined a gym.

Understand that I ENJOY exercising alone.  I love putting on my music and just running.  No one to rely on, no one to slow me down or push me over my limit, no one to "entertain".  Just me and my thoughts. So this is hard for me, but very important.  I read the studies on how weight training is as important as cardio, I know, I know!

I sat with the trainer and set up a program for me.  Day one will be upper body and day two will be lower body.  Ab machines both days.  And since I have a treadmill at home, I was determined to venture onto other equipment.  Hopefully the determination of "getting my moneys worth" will keep me going back.  We will see over the next few months!

12/2/11 - 10 minute abs, 16 pushups, 4 miles on the treadmill

12/1/11 at PH (the gym) - Upper body lifts, 1 mile on the arc trainer and 6 miles on the bike and PERFECT with my water

Deb: Flipping the Calendar

New month!  Exactly four months until race day.  I am hoping to do some research on training today and decide how I am going to tackle the upcoming months.  Winter in the northeast will make it tough, but not impossible.

12/1/11  10 minute abs, 15 pushups (real ones!!), 3.75 miles on treadmill

Hay Val, you wanted to post what I did that day - how about you !?!
